Die hards will go for the all-German, extended cut... Which can be quite the long haul for any viewer, but well worth it. A sordid journey underwater on a German U-boat. Magnificent tension and (of course) and intimate feeling of claustrophobia. Believable and well-executed, Das Boot (the boat) is a landmark film for the ongoing WW2 saga of films and a must see for film snobs and casual viewers alike (but not without ample warning)

Who would have thought that I'd like a war movie so much? It gives a really good insight into what it must be like on board a submarine, along with some really good suspense. I didn't find the subtitles a hindrance at all.

If you're a purist you will want to see this in its true form, German. If you like subtitles, Das Boot is a great movie experience, action, adventure, details, human drama, it's got it all. If you don't like subtitles (too many words?) they did release this as The Boat, dubbed. Jurgen Prochnow is much better, never mind, he's great no mater the language or film (see The Seventh Sign). Submerge yourself in this one.

Outstanding look at WWII submarine warfare from an anti-war, German perspective. Fine direction by Wolfgang Petersen, who captures the sense of tension and claustrophobia that must have gripped submarine crews on both sides of the conflict. See this if you liked "The Hunt for Red October. "
