This film does not follow history too close, however it is a very interesting view of Queen "Juana La Loca" madness. In XV and XVI century Europe royal marriages were just political alliances. Nobody really cared whether or not there was love between royal couples. Living in a mainly sexist society, royal women were the most affected victims of these practices. Actually Queen Juana's sister, Catherine of Aragon (first wife of Henry VIII of England) was a clear example of the role of a renaissance royal wife. Royal wives were regarded as submissive wombs to produce male heirs. On the other hand, it was widely accepted that their husbands could seek sexual pleasure in other women. According to this film Queen Juana was regarded as a mad woman just because she did not accept that submissive role, and also because she professed a real (and very carnal) love for her husband Philip the Fair. That is not the real truth, she was really mad, nevertheless it is definitely a very convincing theatrical twist of the reality in order to make a quite remarkable film. The acting is very good as well as the lavishness of the whole production.
