This movie is the best movie I have ever seen. There female heroes all over the world and we must honour them.

Shows how we all get lossed in 'gender related roles'... wonderful for all ages to see, exceptionally moving when pai is crying about the way she felt, her grandpa was disappointed in her, aint that the truth the way always we females feel about letting our male supporting role models/b'friends'/siblings/husbands... brain washing, Pai showed them it's a lot of humbug.

It was one of the best films I've ever seen. Don't miss it. Keisha Castle-Hughes is a truly talented actress. Makes you wonder what's so glorious about other mainstream Hollywood actors...

Not only was the scenery beautiful but the characters were credible and fascinating. The movie portrays the challenge that a feisty young girl faces when her grandfather is unable to accept her and her place in the patriarchal society that she was born into. Keisha is a born star and has more talent tha most of the people who will be up for oscars this year. A performance from the heart. All the actors were totally convincing.

I saw "the whale rider" when it first came out and loved every minute of it but you do have to be in the right mood for it. As a natural born kiwi not only did the theme but the landscape captured my awe as it made me realize what new zealand has to offer the world but I can understand a lot of the world not understanding it. It is definitey a deep thinker. I own the dvd now and when every I need a lift up I watch it. The movie is very encouragable and has great symbols and metaphors that take a while to be found. I am now reading the book and realize that the film leaves a lot. Definitely go and see it for a new perspective on life.

I loved it!!! What a fantastic movie. Really nice seeing a good homegrown movie. Just to remind people, Maori are the indigenous people of New Zealand (not Aborigines, they are the indigenous people of Australia)

Nice photography and direction but just a little bit too earnest - bordering on the glum sometimes.

BEAUTIFUL physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. The acting was... beyond "acting" (Castle-Hughes in particular but the wole cast honoured their characters) Please see it and learn.

I'm not usually one that sees a movie and then says, "you gotta go see this, " but, "You gotta go see Whale Rider! " The Aboriginal people of New Zealand have struggled, just like us, to hold on to their culture and this movie is an inspiration to any of us that believes that is a worthy thing to do. The film is as beautiful in its setting as it is in its message. The strength and commitment of the Maori Elders and the love of a young child carries this movie in a very good way. Please see it soon.

Its was a great movie, filled with bravery and sadness. I think that anyone on this website should see this movie. A GREAT MOVIE!!! It was probobably the best movie I have seen in years! It is a BATTLE OF THE SEXES!! It was a good way of showing all people are equal no mater who they are, girl or boy.

What a beautiful film. The glimpses of the impoverished situation that the Maori face are so similar to those of the Canadian First Nations people. Wonderful story, great characters, hints at the complexity of the Maori culture, the history, and how it all fits together today... so compelling.

The more I thought about this movie the more I liked. It is worth seeing more than once. It is a truly inspiring story that is not encombered by hollywood plot or ridiculous props. This is a wonderful film. See it, rent it, own it.

See this movie as a insight to the maori people, their history, their culture. See this movie for the brillant acting of a 12 year old, and all who took part. See it as an understanding that we must all change.

Refreshingly beautiful! So un-Hollywood. Finally, not an action-packed or plotless thriller, in fact, slow moving and enjoyably so. Whale Rider draws you into the deep-rooted culture of aboriginal life in New Zealand. The story line was deep and spiritual and touched me in ways few movies do. Perhaps this film is a bit beyond what young children can appreciate but mature kids with a good attention span might truly enjoy it. Outstanding performances! A must see.

A most wonderful film, with an amazing discovery in the person of Keisha Catle-Hughes, the young star. There are no villains in this film, just people with hopes and fears that sometimes blind them for a time to what is true. As well as a story about the tensions between adaptation and preservation in aboriginal culture, this is a feminist film in the very best sense (the men are not portrayed as terrible, but some of them need a little help to adjust to change) The story has elements of fantasy, but uses them to bring messages that are true and powerful nonetheless.

After we got out of this movie, we decided not to watch anything else for a while. I imagine that Hollywood fare will feel pretty shallow compared to this masterpiece. What an incredible film! The acting seemed to natural that I sometimes forgot that I was watching a movie.

This film is beautifully crafted, subtle, poignant and wonderfully acted. Yes, at times it can be slow, but overall this is an excellent film, well worth the money. The cinematography is stunning, the story is uplifting... I highly recommend Whale Rider to anyone who wants a change of pace from the typical "shoot-em-up" Hollywood fare.

I can't believe that the rating has fallen below 9. This movie was fantastic. My wife and I had no idea what we were about to see but came out of the movie wanting to name our first doughter Peikea. A brilliant movie and a must see.

I entered the theatre expecting some shallow flimsy flamsy film, and exited, tears streaming down my cheeks, changed as a person, and touched like no piece of art could ever touch me. This movie was AMAZING. I would see it again and again. Not to mention how hot Mana Taumaunu was!!! (aka Hemi)

I loved this movie! It was emotional, with many themes to it. Very different from the normal movies you see. I enjoyed the Spiritual, cultural, personal empowerment and philisophical aspects to it, as well as the magic in it. It is my hope that more of these kind of movies, along with "Lord of the Rings", Harry Potter movies, etc. , are produced in the future. We need all the inspirational, thought and spirit provoking themes we can get in these times.

If you're looking for malice, you won't find it here. And you could say the movie is about family/culture/society/politics, about patriarchy/feminism, about tradition/progress, and you could call the movie a fable/myth, but really, the magic in the movie is that there can be a positive response to courage and vision, a community that values it. I think some people just don't get it, which is to be expected. From one whose favourite directors are Tarkovsky and Kurosawa, I give it the highest rating.
