There is no point to expect a decent script and acting from a movie like this with a "VS" between two space bastards. What I expected was the set piece, special effect & actions, which Paul WS Anderson didn't even get right. There is no doubt we are expecting a lot of fight between the aliens and the predators, but how many fights were actually there? Not more than 15 minutes, and the fight scenes were mostly done in the dark, and even worse, in a fast and fragmented fashion. I strongly believe the movie deserves more than this! The predators hasn't even popped out their fanciest weapons before they are wasted. Think about the predator's cruelness toward Arnold in the first Predator, those youngsters in AVP surely have warm hearts toward the aliens, which I suppose, are 10x scarier and more dangerous than Arnold. The idea of a pyramid actually isn't a very bad one, at least that shot of the predators' ships over the pyramids some thousand years ago is quite interesting and hints some interesting themes: hi-tech vs cultures; rituals on earth and in the outer space, etc. However, I don't see these themes being well explored in the plot and set piece design. The constantly moving maze is interesting, but nowhere near the complexity of the one in "Cube". A lot more suspense can be created circling the maze. I guess too much time was used to establish the so-called story development. The ending is hilarious. Alright, we have to choose between the crazy aliens and warm-hearted predators, but come on... not in such cheesy fashion?! OK, watch it and you'll know what I mean. I can see the potential this movie has. There are some cool scenes actually, for example the one when the predator chops the alien's head in the half in a swordman 's fashion, we actually need more of them! But unfortunately, the fun moments are not enough and hidden to be explored by the careful moviegoers. At last, I will comment on the alien queen. She is such a beautiful beast, but why is she running like a t-rex at the end of the movie? What were in the minds of the special effect team when they were designing the queen's movement? Still remember the original queen in Aliens? She moves and crawls like a spider, which is what makes her so creepy! A giant spider-like creature with double mouths chasing after you in the corrider! Imagine that. But what the hell with the t-rex-like queen on the snow on earth? That's the most disappointing moment of the movie, I believe. Beside all my bashing of the movie, I actually think it could have been better if Fox gave more freedom to Anderson. I'm very sure Anderson has a better movie in mind if he has the power to execute it. In short, it's understood that a movie like AVP is not about character development or great screenwriting, but it cannot even deliver what it's supposed to have: great actions, SFX and set design. A total waste of opportunity of making an exciting movie. 4/10.
