A wonderfully crafted film, set in china in the 1940s. It shows of a social realism about being a female during this period and in this place. It encites several human emotions, pride, affection, happiness, approval, disappointment - a film that invokes the mind and entices the heart.

Director Wu did a particularly good job capturing the tumultuous political and social evolution of post-dynastic (but definitely not post-modern) China. Because the country was in a frenzy during that time period, the citizens needed to evolve their ideologies in order to keep up with changing times. Gender equality was a concept in Chinese philosophy decades before his western counterparts. And although gender equality is the cornerstone of this movie's morals, I feel Wu did a good job in giving us a sense that this is just amongst the many ideological shifts China has made in hopes of a better future.

This is one of the top ten movies I've ever seen! Set in china of the 1940s it brings together an older man (an entertainer who's known as the king of masks) and an orphan. The cinematography is lush and beautiful. The plot is sentimental but also heartening and uplifting. This movie celebrates humans and life. Without a doubt the director is talented, I'd love to see more of his work, including the movies mentioned by the other reviewer. I've never really seen anything like this film, it stands out as one of my all time favorites.

This film was a little boring considering what the director has previously done. For instance, the film uses China in its setting, almost as if the country is a living and breathing character, but it fails in its attempt to sell it as a post-modern country, and misrepresents this gorgeous country and, in turn, the film itself. Director Wu's work was much better in the 1984 film River with Buoys, and Lao Jing in 1986.
