This is a fascinating film that never crosses the line from hard reality into unbelievable fiction. The first third (if not half) of the film is devoted to explaining how MikeM grew into the psycho killer he became, both in terms of his early life and, to a lesser extent, in terms of his captivity during 15 years of institutionalization. Most importantly, we learn why he wears that famous mask, from a psychological point of view. Throughout the film, I found myself feeling very sympathetic toward Michael, whilst still able to see that he deserves the bad ending he ultimately receives. I think most people in my generation now understand that while it's not the norm for troubled youths to go on murdering rampages, these things do in fact happen. There's plenty of blood and some scary tension, but I see this film as a fascinating violent drama more than your average fright flick. To anyone who cares about the mind and about horror, you will definitely appreciate this film. Go see it! P. S. : There were altogether too many 17 year-old breasts on display, to my taste. But I chose to take this in stride as, traditionally, bosoms make some sort of appearance in horror films, especially older ones. And since I like Rob Zombie, I figure he didn't mean it in a chauvenistic way... or at least, that's the doubt of which I'm giving him the benefit.
