What did Jesus say about living by faith and not by sight? Somehow, not that I would know, I do not think Jesus is sitting up in heaven stoked that people are watching him get maliciously attacked. Would Jesus not rather that money that went into making this film go to helping people that need a roof over them and not towards a film trying to terrify people with images that are suppose to make you believe in Jesus. The message seems a bit lost Mel, just a little bit.

WONDERFUL, life-changing! Finally, someone closely depicts the true suffering of the Master. Thank God for using Mel Gibson to bring forth the TRUTH! Praise God for coming to us, and loving us when we push Him away.

It's a good movie but I still prefer so far the movies about The Christ in the 1970's. There is even some part of the movie that doesn't reflect the Bible, so it's the only the problem I see in the movie. Hopefully the viewers will retain a good message after watching this one.

This is one of the great controversial films of our time. It's only a small segment of the Jesus story but Mel Gibson depicted it in a beautiful and cinematic way. Some have critiscized this film to be too violent, but these people don't understand that this does come close to real cruxifictions. IT is a complicated story that deserves respect and understanding. It is a wonderful rendetion of the Jesus tale and is worth seeing in theatres!

Powerful movie especially when you realise this did happen. How can anyone sustain such excruciating pain. Truly Jesus must be the Son of God. Congratulations to Mel Gibson on his boldness and courage to produce such a film - some faith. Brings the event to life but I doubt that any portrayal could do justice to what actually took place - one would have to be there to empathise with the reality of one man's suffering. That Jesus Christ, the Son of God, should leave glory to die on our behalf so that we can be reconciled to the Father God. On a not too flattering note, the hype before the release, tended to weaken the impact. A must see movie though.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.]
What else is the philosophy of Christ which He Himself calls a 'rebirth' (renascentia), than the restoration of human nature to the original goodness of its creation? I wanted to start my commentary by quoting from Erasmus of Rotterdam’s Paracelsis. The Jesus of the renaissance symbolized “la Vita Nuova” (the new life), as a consequence of the discovery of Greek humanist scriptures and philosophy that led to the burgeoning of new thoughts regarding Jesus. However, the main objective of this paper is to discuss the controversial Gibson film “The Passion of the Christ” and try to analyse how sincere was Gibson’s Jesus to the Jesus of the renaissance, on a multitude of levels, mainly: the humanisation of religion; social and devotional realism moving to mysticism and scepticism, and finishing with human realism. Let us primarily approach the movie, by starting with the humanisation of religion theme. There is absolutely no doubt that the "Passion of the Christ” contains extended scenes of violence inflicted to Jesus. Looking back at the medieval ages, for centuries, Christians only emphasized on the deeds and the resurrection of the Christ, to impose Jesus as a mere divine power. It wasn’t until the renaissance that Christians referred to the Gospels in the passion plays in order to dramatize the suffering and death of the Lord, & that’s what Gibson tried to accomplish when we examine how the roman soldiers are pictured as heartless tormenters who brutally beat Jesus, and while he was carrying the cross they carried on whipping him as he was trying to advance to the top of the hill, even though it is evident that he could barely stand. The excess of the graphic violence, particularly in the bloody scourging and flogging scenes, aims at approaching people from God and motivates them to retrieve their faith by focusing on his human side, pain, passion and compassion for everyone even for his aggressors, up to a point that jewish columnist Ray Young, in an attempt to criticize the excessive atrocity implicating the Jews, accused Gibson’s vision & presentation of the Christ as woefully mundane. Young says that The Passion sets about to crucify rather than worship, he believes that it is a troubled, ungodly film. To what Gibson responds that it’s an interpretation of the Gospels that visualizes the Christ’s spiritual and divine power by means of modesty & dignity, and that the use of ancient languages and extended sequences of violence are attempts at a realism he thinks no other movie has reached. Now we’ll move on to the social and devotional realism aspects of the film. Jesus is no longer that European looking man, with intense blue eyes inspiring divinity; he’s a stereotyped Middle Eastern looking person. However, The most compelling sequence in The Passion is when Jesus flashes back to the time when he was a carpenter, manufacturing a table, as his mother, Mary steps in & asks him wether he’s hungry, but also when he sprinkles Mary with water as he was washing his hands. I think that Gibson’s objective was to plainly show Jesus’ particular human side. In this scene Jesus is not merely The Messiah, he’s also an ordinary man. In many other scenes Gibson highlighted social realism, by means of trying to distinguish every character, regarding the gender, social status, and emotional expression. Pilate’s wife, Claudia, for instance is portrayed in a sort of a heroic way. She seems to be gentle to Jesus and believes he has been unjustly accused; if we were to go back to the holy book, there is a documented foundation for this behaviour; however the film goes beyond this limited depiction, for she (Claudia) even offers Mary and Mary Magdalene a gift of linen cloths, also, she advised Pilate not to harm Jesus because of a premonitory dream she had. Needless to say that Gibson’s mysticism is apparent in many scenes of The Passion. Let us consider the crucifixion vista; the New Testament indicates that Jesus was nailed to the cross, nonetheless it doesn’t state wether he was wrists or palms pinned. Scientifically, victims were most probably nailed through wrists so as to sustain the weight of the body, not through the palms. Christian art, however, has illustrated the wounds on the palms rather than on the wrists, although this was never precised in the Gospels. I think that this is due to Gibson’s preference to expose the stigmata as alleged by some Catholic mystics. Thus this movie, as an expression of pious individualism like Christian renaissance art, marks an important shift from the mere scholastic reliance on religious authority to modern asseztions of faith based on inner conviction. According to Gibson: “this movie is about faith, hope, love and forgiveness. It’s my version, the Gospel aspects I wanted to show”. So we are watching the “Gospel according to Mel Gibson”, since every person trying to make such a film, will unavoidably give way to personal preferences. It’s quite difficult not to incorporate our own interpretation when harmonizing the four Gospels. Let us consider once more the crucifixion: conspicuously, only Jesus carries the entire cross with both the crossbeam and post, whereas the thieves just held the crossbeams, this Gibson interpretation among others, can lead to a fruitful personal meditation on the sufferings of the Lord, without being historical in all its details. Finally, Gibson even has the enchained Jesus thrown over a bridge, dangling helplessly in the air above the water, which at first seems to be the director's own exaggeration idea, however, it’s not, Gibson was borrowing from the dreams of an Augustinian German nun, Sister Anne Catherine Emmerich who experienced during her life the mystical phenomenon of the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, in addition she had mystical visions, the content of which came to be written down in The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Furthermore, many events in the movie underline scepticism, and doubt. Observe how Peter follows Jesus and the soldiers into Jerusalem, but cowardly denies Jesus exactly as he had earlier predicted. Additionally, a sceptic mood emanates from the agony in the garden of Gesthemane, as Jesus was addressing God, asking him if he could spare him this fate. Before Jesus’ final submission to the divine will, he is continuously tempted by the devil but eventually overcomes these temptation. Ciao.

Very dissapointing after all the hype! Felt like I was watching one of those fake "Wide world of Wrestling" matches where there is blow after blow after blow raining down on the poor victim. Was this the best you could do Mel, sort of an extended bloodbath: hit-bleed, hit-no gasp, hit-gasp, slash- bleed, hit-bleed... Pretty boring!

A Very Powerful movie! “The Passion of the Christ” touched a depth in my heart I had never known before! Not only did Christ’s love strike the core of my being, but it also moved me to love Him back with all that I was! As I sat there watching the horrible torture, I kept thinking ‘I wish I were really there with Him; I would have loved to have offered to bear part of the pain so that His share would be less’. It was, of course, easy for me to think that, in the comfort of a theatre, when in reality, I might have done no better than Peter! My heart continued to question why a truly loving God would allow all the suffering in this world. This movie helped me accept the truth that even Christ accepted suffering as a reality of life in this world, where sin exists, and that He did not come to take away the suffering, but to show us how to rise with Him above the suffering, while we are suffering. Jim Caviezel showed me a Christ so loving and compassionate that I could no longer wonder if He really loves us. As soon as my heart was able to humbly accept this truth about suffering, and I called out to Jesus for help, I experienced His companionship with me - He reached out to me where I was, in the middle of my suffering - and the peace and comfort that gave me was so real that I could not doubt His presence with me. Mel Gibson said that he used the wounds of Christ to heal his own wounds, and many of the saints tell us that they embrace their suffering and unite it with Christ’s suffering. I have found that It is NOT by GETTING RID OF (or tyring to! ) all suffering from my life that I can find peace, but by ACCEPTING my cross and carrying it with God’s help, that I can find His presence and His peace, in the midst of suffering and pain! This movie came at a time when I needed it most, to show me God’s truths in a way I could understand and a Christ I can, and want to, be in a relationship with! Thank you so much, and God bless you, Mel and Jim!!

Very simply the best movie ever ever ever made. It is so emotional, and I honor Jim Caviezel for playing his part so well. And to Mel Gibson, he's a true visionary. He is without a doubt my most fav actor and director ever. Everybody in the theatre(it was a full house) was balling their eyes out. I have never cried so hard in a single movie ever. And the whole subtitle thing worked into the movie seamlessly. At least worth 15 or so oscars.

A very moving movie, but not sentimental or mushy. Religous viewpoints aside, the acting and cinematography are of a high order. As to the blood and gore, I find that it accurately reflects the treatment of condemned prisoners of the time, and is not grossly overdone. Of course it could have been toned down, but only with a distinct loss of authenticity. I am disappointed to see the comments of such people below who call it masochism, and echo that portion of the media that condemn the film without understanding it's message. I'm glad to see that the vast majority of other comments are enthusiastic and positive over this film. Apparently it is an act of faith by Mel Gibson who risked alot on this movie, with next to no support from his peer. Mel Gibson is an active Traditional Catholic, and I support his message and efforts. Well Done!

Excellent movie! A recurring objection seems to be that the scourging was overdone. However, Isaiah 52:14 (New American Bible) DOES say “... so marred was His look beyond that of man, and His appearance beyond that of mortals... ”. Did Gibson know conclusively EXACTLY what amount of torture that meant? Does any one of us? Does even the Bible give sufficient details for anyone to determine this conclusively? It does seem from this prophecy, however, that the torture was extremely severe. Some people may have liked to have seen more of Jesus’ life than a few flashbacks and the last scene after His Resurrection, but Mel Gibson MEANT “The Passion of the Christ” to be SPECIFICALLY about the PASSION, and as such he’s done a most excellent job!! Nevertheless, it did much more than show us JUST the beating and the dying!! This movie was meant to be experienced. It was meant to bring the 2000 year-old event into our lives, so that those who want to (and are open to it), can experience Jesus’ presence and get to know Him better. Even though it showed predominently Jesus’ suffering and dying, much of His character came through in His interaction with the people around Him! I think a lot of people would love to see Mel Gibson make a movie showing Jesus’ life, but that would be another movie!

Very Realistic & Enlightening! A Masterpiece! I love Jim Caviezel’s Christ! This is the first time anyone has ever succeeded in making Christ real for me! Thank you, Jim & Mel. Maia Morgenstern’s Mary also touched me in a special way, and since much has already been said about Christ, I’d like to say a few words about Mary. While I never had any trouble believing that God the Father created Mary to be mother to His Son, and that Christ gave her to us to be our mother too, I was never able to relate to her. I couldn’t ask her for her intercession, because it felt like I was talking to a stranger. “The Passion of the Christ” bridged that gap for me. Maia’s Mary is real. Her warmth, her strength and the deep love and affection she showed for her Son looked very real - it felt like a mother’s love - and I love the bit of sense of humour between mother and Son, in the only funny part in the movie! Maia was very good at showing Mary’s great suffering and yearning to ease her Son’s pain, but like Christ, she also showed great humility and trust in His Father’s will & acceptance of what Christ had to do. Her first words on the night Jesus was captured were “It has begun, Lord”, and with her heart breaking, she faithfully followed Him, reaching out to comfort Him with a mother’s love, as He carried His cross to do His Father’s will to “make all things new”. Mary’s great love, and great strength and humble acceptance of God’s will, in the midst of her heartbreaking sorrow really spoke to me, and by the end of the movie, I felt like I knew her and wanted to know the real Mary better. Mary endured the greatest pain that could be asked of any parent, but she also had the perfect relationship with the perfect Child! Blessed is she indeed, and what an example she is for us! She shows us how to follow Christ and do the will of God in our own lives.
