An incredibly powerful and disturbing film that deserves every accolade. The silence in the theatre at the end of the movie a testament to the strength of character development achieved. A strong cast and an even stronger story that explores male bonding, love, devotion, true friendship and the effects man's inhumanity to man has on the main characters. It is not an easy movie to watch but one that definitely should be! Very deep and dark in its truths it has the ability to emotionally affect the viewer along with the main characters. A 10 in all aspects.

An amazing movie and very deep. Goes into many aspects and talks about many things. Christopher Walken was absolutely amazing. Doesnt get truer than this.

Whenever I see that this movie is on TV and I turn to watch it and I see Christopher Walken's character singing in the bar at the beginning I feel like breaking down because it is so heartbreaking to see how drastically he changes. It is a really really good film.

As a student of History of Film, I must add that this film is one of classic proportion. Between the excellent camera angles and lighting, the scenes of human compassion, and dedicated friendship, The Deer Hunter is a film that most people should see.

I saw this movie when it came out and just again, more than 25 years later. Then I was caught up in the fresh emotions of an immoral war in contrast with the highest of human morals - love of others. DeNiro, Walken, Savage and Streep give great performances - their pain and terror comes across as very real. What is wrong with us, that our country continues to send our men away to die, become mangled and scarred physically, emotionally and spiritually?

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] I was struck by the scene at the end where everyone gathers at the coffee shop. There is no disgust at the result of the war that one could expect, but a more communal sense of loyalty. These are proud Americans of Russian descent, but their government is in a cold war with their homeland. Their situation is similar to Italian Americans whose loyalty, during WWII, was suspect. There is a scene in the movie where a doctor approaches Christopher Walken and asks him if his name is Russian. He responds adamantly that it's American. The whole movie speaks of loyalty. Meryl Streep has the chance to go out with the manager of a local business, but she remains with Michael. And so it is a poignant scene at the end, where these people who have had their lives torn apart by an immoral war join together and sing God Bless America..

A fantastic movie. They just don't make them like this anymore. The director gives the audience and the story time to develop at a slow pace that is unheard of by todays standards. Todays filmmakers should take a lesson from this beautiful film.

The best Vietnam movie EVER! Just, what's with the name if it has nothing to do with "deer hunting".

I've seen this movie 3 times... A must see. It captures male bonding, the sixties, the Vietnam war, like no other movie. It's a rough ride and long, but one well worth the effort. It gets a 10 on every level. I'll watch this one again, just get the popcorn ready.
