This was a great comedy that is worth buying on dvd and as always Ellen Page was amazing.

It was OK could be better than that. I just saw it cuz my mom loves Sarah Jessica Parker, I accepted because Ellen Page was in it.

This is the best! I really loved it. There was so many laughs. I laughed my head off until my jaw hurt. Its akmost out of the theatres so rent this movie.

All around great movie... many laughs, good storyline, heart-warming... Thomas Hayden Church was very convincing in his portrayal! Less than a 7 for this movie? Wouldn't think of it!

It was incredibly boring. There isn't anything else to describe it. The name sounds as if it could be ok but it was really bad. There was no plot, and the actors weren't at there best. Nothing interesting happened in the movie at all. I also found a little disturbing at some scenes.

I'd give this movie a rating of 7, but I think the current rating of 5.6 is exceptionally unfair, so I'm giving it 10. It's actually quite an interesting movie. There may not be so much action, but it's worth your money to sometimes stretch your imagination and sympathy into the lives of ordinary people for whom, disappointment notwithstanding, life must go on.

Character development was horribly done, I felt nothing for the characters. Things kept happening out of nowhere and made no sense. I felt the script was trying to hard to live up to the name of the movie. Maybe the name came first?

I found that the plot was boring and that the was no reason to really like the characters except for maybe the brother. I found myself thinking "ok if I just sit here for 10 minutes more, maybe something interesting will happen" and I was greatly disappointed.

I love Ellen Page and Sarah Jessica Parker. And yet this movie was exceptionally boring. I didn't laugh and I had not empathy or interest in any of the characters. After seeing this movie I went to see 'The Counterfeiters'. Now THAT was a great movie. Beautiful, complex, and well-written.

This is a classic independant film. It is a little dark, some choppy editing, great premise in the story if executed a little poorly. What is great is the acting. Ellen Page is spot-on as a confused, too old for her age teenager. Thomas Hayden Church is funny in that independant film way, understated! This film is worth seeing if you love indepedant film, not if you love Hollywood!

It took me a couple of days to figure out how I felt about this movie. There's nothing really great about it, and yet I really enjoyed it. The acting was great, and I loved the dry humour. Don't feel the need to rush to the theater, but at least rent it.

I found this movie to be quite enjoyable. It bothers me people keep on going out to see it because they liked Juno but Ellen Page has done much before that movie and is bound to do a lot more in her career, much of which will not relate to that movie in the slightest. I thought the plot was intriguing though slow in some parts but I would definitely reccomend it to people that like the sort of dark comedy/drama type of movies. I would definitely compare it to the work of Wes Anderson in the way that it is dry humour that is really smart and at times provocatively written.

Not the comedy I was expecting but one of the best I have seen this year. Good character building and great acting. Made me really want to smack Dennis Quaid and Thomas Hayden Church - means they really got me believing in their characters. Not for everyone but I really enjoyed this 'family'.

It is fitting that the performances are the strongest assets in Smart People, a character-driven film about family dysfunction. Its cynical, dark humour and blending of misanthropy and humanity is reminiscent of the films of Alexander Payne. The characters are unusual and challenging, at once unlikeable and sympathetic. Dennis Quaid is remarkably uncompromising and brave in his portrayal of the pompous, numbly suffering professor who’s lost his sense of purpose but comes to want a second chance at life. In some scenes, Quaid seems to channel Jack Nicholson at his sardonic best. Ellen Page is also excellent as the anal, dismissive daughter, worlds away from the plucky, adorable misfit she was in Juno. Like his role in Payne’s Sideways, Thomas Haden Church plays an irresponsible free spirit with more depth than initially meets the eye. Sarah Jessica Parker gives a subtle, layered performance as the conflicted, emotionally-distant, commitmentphobe girlfriend. Ashton Holmes is impressive as the raging but perhaps most well-adjusted member of the family. All the actors succeed wonderfully in revealing that their characters' unpleasant behaviours stem from unacknowledged, festering pain.

I loved it. It's a slow movie but you have to know that before you go and see it. It's a character-driven piece much like Sideways was. Ellen Page steals the movie though. Her wittiness and her stoic stares are just perfect.

I usually enjoy Dennis Quaid movies but I was very disappointed with this one. I was actually yawning and falling asleep during this one. It would fall in the "if someone rents it I will watch it" movie category.

Strong performances from all cast members in this witty comedy. I especially enjoyed Ellen Page and Thomas Hayden Chruch. A little predictable at times, but interesting character development throughout the movie. Nice to see Dennis Quaid in a more serious role of a university professor.

I found it to be completely engaging. A very smart script brough to life by a group of genuinely smart actors. If, however, you don't like movies that demand you pay attention and do a little thinking, then this may not be the best choice for you. Go home and watch your well-worn vhs copy of Dumb and Dumber instead.

The film depicts a scenario in which there are two common points made - Bridging gaps, & the other, Filling holes. The five main characters each played an equally parallel role in the stuggle formed from a broken family unit with a clear disfunction. Openmindedness and acceptance was also a clear message throughout the film. The comedy and it's subtle value was done brilliantly. The simplicity and the to the point message kept the film flowing. An awful movie. The story could have been told in 20 minutes, but even then it still would have been terrible. The plot alternated between dragging and stopping altogether. There were more scenes of cars driving and people walking than there were scenes that told any story. The characters' motives rarely seemed believable.
