From the perspective of the viagra generation, this film is worth sitting through if you think of it as a 2 hour meditation on Norah Jones' lips, which are truly gorgeous, even if her acting debut was only fair to middlin. Jude Law did his usual standup job of pouring lashings of irrestitible charm over everything. I wondered if Weisz and Portman agreed to act in this movie because it gave them the chance to step out of character and have a crack at something completely different - quite a challenge in this car wreck of a movie. At times I was thinking, is the direction of this movie supposed to be cool or is it really as bad as I think? Certainly there were 4 occasions when I did violent double takes because the cutting and music editing was so bad the high school AV club could have done better. But then American directors like to to do Kung Fu movies. I just hope Oriental audiences think we do a better job of them than this guy did of an American movie full of people moodily obsessed with the carnage of broken relationships. By half way through I was having to suppress my irritation and was wondering why do people think their silly feelings are so important anyway? Never a good sign! But then Rachel was hot and so was the pie.

A very sensitive, sensible study of a young woman's journey... a beautiful meditation on love... great music, good acting, good suspense... I will buy the DVD and watch it many more times!

The artsy cinematography was bizarre and made action scenes hard to follow. The script didn't quite hold together. I normally don't mind slow moving, talkie films but I was twitching in my seat waiting for it to be over. I went to the movie because of what looked to be a great cast. Unfortunately the better actors (Weisz, Portman and Strathairn) could not salvage this film and the direction was amateurish at best. I was left wondering what the hole point of the movie was. Something profound about modern life in big cities, no doubt, but it didn't come across. Many close ups of vanilla ice-cream melting over blueberry pie, which amounted to a pile of nothing, in my view. The food looks tasty, but the movie is not.

Kar Wai needs to get out of America, and stay out of America! (unfortunately it doesn't look like this is going to happen any time soon.) He also needs to beg Christopher Doyle to continue working as his D. O. P. The cinematography was laughable. I generally like Kar Wai's films, but I really struggled to sit through this one. The actors were all poorly directed, and I am guessing (or at least partially hoping) that the screenplay was lost somewhere in it's translation. The film is chalked full of cliché's, and is told through the eyes of a naive little boy from Hong Kong, who goes to America, in search of the "American dream". Unfortunately the boy remains confused, and continues to seek false hope. In many independent film circles Kar Wai has been classified as a "sellout" watching this, I almost felt sorry for him, but by the end of the film I could no longer contain my laughter (keep in mind, the film is intended to be a drama) As soon as I began to laugh the rest of the audience quickly joined in.

Unlike a previous commentator, I think you'd have to be "hollow-minded" to like this sorry excuse for a film. The underdeveloped story gives us a screenful of angst filled characters without giving us any background on their lives. It's impossible to develop empathy for any of the main players because throughout the film we learn almost nothing about them. Everybody is deeply troubled in some way but we hardly ever find out why. In other words there is no character development and as such it fails to connect with its audience. The best description for this movie is "angst in a vacuum". Unfortunately, the great talent on hand is utterly wasted. Don't even bother with renting the DVD.

Beautiful film, indelible images especially of Law and Jones in the NY cafe. Well worth the time and money.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] What a ridiculous film. June Law as window dressing just posing and the ridiculous ending of the film - oh dear. Nathalia Portman on the other hand is phenomenal and Norah Jones is about 2 stars.

Great movie, love it! The film gets warming up right after that. The theme is jazz, so don't expect it to be a r&r. If you are looking for something shallow and funny, stay away from it.

Obviously this movie pales in comparison to his masterpiece "In the Mood for Love", but it's still a decent Hollywood debut for Wong Kar Wai. Rachel Weisz, David Strathairn and Natalie Portman put in fine performances although Norah Jones' character was clearly underdeveloped. Mind you, the film is probably not for the hollow-minded, as one would expect them to walk out after half an hour into the movie.

This is a deeply flawed but lovely lovely film. The Memphis story I can do without, but the New York segment is irresistible -- a perfect confection of mood and tone. Don't expect much from Norah Jones. She is pretty to look at, but her contribution is rather vacuous. Fortunately, Jude Law is there making it achingly real. His NY story is worth the price of admission.

I gave this movie more time than it deserved. Walked out after 30 minutes of pure "movie watching torture"!

I can't believe how so many good actors could produce such a piece of garbage. Do not waste your money.
