First there was Texas Chainsaw Massacre (in a dark forest), then Alien (in outer space), then The Deep (at the bottom of the ocean) and Lake Placid (in a swamp),... and who knows how many others. Same formula. Darkness or mist. Big bad things or people that pick off the characters one by one. The Mist definitely falls into this pattern. (Hey, let’s try it in a grocery store!) But there are three things that save this movie from mediocrity. First is the brilliant characterization of people irrationally and desperately clutching at religion to save themselves. It’s a bit contrived, with everything from the Bible to stem cell research thrown into the mix, but it probably isn’t far from the religious frenzy which would likely develop. Definitely a slap on the wrist for fundamentalism. The second thing is the nightmarish reality of the special effects. Nothing is spared to make the nightmare appear believable on the screen. And the third thing is the twist at the end. Slightly predictable, but still very worthy of a Stephen King story. Great horror flick.
