User's review

Nick Stahl was terrific as a passive person 'sleepwalking' through life until he is forced to take action or wind up forever tied to his abusive past. AnnaSophia Robb was also very good as his niece, sullen and rebellious when she believes her mom has abandoned her but slowly flourishing in her uncle's tender care. Dennis Hopper was scary as usual as the abusive father to Nick Stahl and Charlize Theron's characters. Theron was quite good as the trailer-trash mom striving for a better life. Her role was small but memorable. A good film that sheds light on the difficulties faced by adult children of abusive families.
