Ok, I wouldn't recommend this for the kids, but I'm surprised here by the recurring comments about the violence. It seems this is a necessary part of telling the story of the cesspool that was New York in the mid 1800's. It isn't hard to imagine that, given the times, such violence was just a part of everyday life. I rate this highly for the acting, directing, but, mostly, for the accurate depiction of a fascinating time and place in history that is mostly ignored. P. S. If nothing else, go see it for Daniel Day Lewis performance alone. Outstanding.
