I was expecting a cross between "Rocky" and "Cacoon" and watched the movie to see how it would turn out... WOW was I suprised! This film is far more than just another boxing movie. Sure, the story of boxer Jim Braddock has elements of "Rocky" to it, but I think it is much closer in spirit to Clint Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby." Set during the Great Depression, it is really a story about one man's struggle to care for and provide for his family while still trying to maintain his pride. One of the most emotionally charged scenes is when Jim Braddock, swallows his pride and goes to his former employers with his hand out asking for a help to get them back on their feet. When he does begin to get his life and career back on track, we understand his motivation and why he became such a folk-hero to the masses who so completely identified with him as "The Ciderella Man." This was a wonderful movie with top-notch directing and an excellent cast. Russel Crowe, Renee Zelleweger, and Paul Giamatti, were fantastic. (Paul Giamatti as the trainer and agent steals the show with outstanding acting. ) The last time that Ron Howard directed a movie with Rossel Crow as the main character, (A Beautiful Mind) it won the Oscars for Best Movie! The movie may have been long but it was paced well by Howard so it didn't seem boring. He did a great job at hitting the highs and lows. You hit a homerun with this one Opie!
