Charlie Wilson's War [2007] Movie Reviews on CinemaClock

This is a movie so deserving of a solid 9/10 rating, as it is an absolute must-see! The acting is at the forefront. Tom Hanks embodies Charlie Wilson to perfection. There's one deserving lead actor Oscar nomination. Philip Seymour Hoffman is simply amazing as an easy-going CFIA operative. You simply cannot believe this is the same actor who played Truman Capote, thus making him a true actor, and delivering a true performance in this movie. Count on him to get a supporting actor Oscar nomination (if the Oscars are actually about acting and not about politics this year) Julia Roberts (whom I find a highly over-rated actress, except for a few of her performances like Erin Brockovich and Pretty Woman) is actually quite good as a Texan millionaire commited to the cause of the Afghan! So, if she gets a nomination (supporting I hope, as her screen time and role certainly are not deserving of a lead nod), I will not be disappointed. The pace of the movie is excellent. It progresses nicely, and keeps you interested in the developing storyline. So kudos go to both the director (Mike Nichols) as well as the screenwriters for adapting Charlie Wilson's book. This is a feel good movie with a lot of humour, plenty of interesting developments, all while managing to moralize America's role in the current state of affairs in Afghanistan. This is truly a movie worth seeing, for the acting, for the story, and because it is the true embodiment of what going to the movies is all about: entertainment with food for thought!

Well said and I am in agreement with the exeption of Julia Roberts' performance which was less than stellar. I do hope that Hoffman is recognized with awards but somehow doubt he cares - I think he's a true actor interested more in the craft than the accolades! If Ms Roberts gets a nomination in any catergory then we know it's all about the politics.

Thank you for your comment! It's always a pleasure to interact with other movie lovers! I certainly agree that Julia Roberts' performance was nowhere near Erin Brockovich level. Hanks and Hoffman are definitely much more deserving of nominations. And yes, Hoffman is a true actor in every sense, as can be seen looking at his varied body of work, such as his amazing portrayals in Boogie Nights, Flawless, Capote, and now Charlie Wilson!
