BTW, when I went to see this, one of the opening trailers was for Tarantino's new anti-Nazi flick, which tries to glorify bashing Nazis' heads in with baseball bats and "scalping" them. Mention a movie like Rambo 3 today and everyone with more than a double digit IQ understands that it was Cold War propaganda. That movie is about 20 years old. I posit that Millenium or Tarantino's new film are more blatantly propagandistic than Rambo 3, and yet people, more than 60 years after the war, seem to think that it's perfectly normal to watch movies about Americans bashing Nazis' heads in with baseball bats. The most extreme propaganda films coming out of the Third Reich couldn't even touch the stuff that Hollywood is putting out today.

The movie is more enjoyable if you read the books, real page-turners... otherwise, the movie isn't all that great... anti-Nazi propaganda? You sound like my German friend who talks about Nazi-bashing... lol... Actually, there was quite a bit of pro-Nazi sentiment in Sweden before and during the war - white supremacy etc. It agree with you that the Brits are the true masters, but Sweden has produced some interesting crime authors... a bit obsessed with serial killers however...

I am aware that there was pro-Nazi sentiment in Sweden. But I don't believe that members of the Nazi Party spent their time gang-raping young girls with Jewish names and then ritually murdering them in accordance with passages from the Bible. Do you catch my drift? As I said to the person I went to see the movie with: if I wrote a script about a black lesbian who murders white Catholic schoolboys in voodoo rituals, what are the chances that it would be made into a movie? Would blacks and homosexuals be outraged by this portrayal? But I guess it's OK to continually portray heterosexual Christian white males with right-wing/nationalistic political beliefs in this way.

You've got quite a discussion going. I see your point. One thing that surprises me is how many Swedes are now writing about serial killers. Mankell complains in his books on how much Sweden has changed but he is the one writing horrific stories. As for Millenium, the book was way better than the movie, in terms of a good suspense. The nazi thing wasn't even really part of the story, I think that was played up in the movie. The Lisbeth character was really interesting in the book, much more than in the movie. I don't know if I'd want to read the book after seeing the movie. Stalin was more of a psycho than Hilter.

I just read these comments but haven't seen the movie yet though I read all three books. All I can say is that the books were never about anti-Nazi propaganda... even if you saw the movie before, it is still worth it to read the books!!

Propaganda is propaganda. If you enjoy being propagandized when you go to theater, that's your choice, but I don't. In my lifetime, I have seen hundreds of movies where WWII era Germans were portrayed as "bad guys," and those portrayals only get more extreme and more out of touch with historical reality as time goes on. Meanwhile, I could count the number of films that show negative portrayals of communists on one hand, even though the number of people murdered by communist regimes numbers into the tens of millions. What does that say about the biases of the people making these films? What's worse is that anti-Nazi propaganda is still being used to this day to justify attacking other nations. This is how the two month bombing of Serbia in 1999 was justified, and also the war against Iraq. You'll also note that Iran and now Russia are being increasingly compared to the Third Reich in the mass media. So no, I don't think that anti-Nazi propaganda is a "good thing." I would prefer to see portrayals of Nazis that were a little more balanced and realistic, or better yet, why don't we accept that WWII has been over for more than 60 years and move on?

When I started to tell the story to a male friend of mine it didn't take him long to tell me it was a 'chick flick' movie and it didn't interested him at all but I just loved the movie and reading the 3 books.

I suppose it is a chick flick, in the sense that it appeals to women who have revenge fantasies towards men, or to girls who have identity issues (as I'm sure there are a lot of today)

Can you please tell me what your true view of anti-male, anti-Christian, anti-Nazi propaganda is? If you are tired of paying high ticket prices, then please verify if it is a movie you's really like to see before attend it? When it come to the referens to Sherlock Holmes... you don't have a problem with him being a drug addict? Or that he in the original is quite stuck up and despise others? But then again: a book is a book and a movie is a movie. If it all where portraiting reality as it is people in general wouldn't want to read or see it. To make it happen you need a twist. Since you're signature is 'le_chiffre' I assume that you're into James Bond as well. To summon up my opinion on your review I would advice you to watch documentaries or pure, pure fiction since you don't seem to cope with the in between.

What do you mean, my "true view"? What is it you failed to understand in my previous posts? Where did I say a movie has to reflect reality? What I'm concerned with are the messages a film is trying to communicate to the public, not whether a film is realistic or not. No, a movie is not "just a movie." Anyone who says that is either stupid, ignorant, or dishonest. It's funny you bring up Holmes's drug addiction, because the BBC altered one episode of its series because the actor (Jeremy Brett) didn't want to promote drug use to children. Doesn't that just further prove my point that moviemakers are fully conscious of the power they hold? Think about that the next time you see a Hollywood movie aimed at teenagers that glamorizes illicit drug use. As to ticket prices, well, I didn't choose to go see this movie; some relatives of mine wanted to see it. If there was a rating system in place to warn moviegoers about propaganda content, then perhaps you'd have a valid point, but since there is no way to know such things in advance, your argument is rather silly. It sounds like you're trying to excoriate me because I didn't like the movie; "so, why did you pay to see it if you didn't like it? " Well, because you don't know what a movie is going to be like until after you've seen it. Duh! Did it ever occur to you that by leaving a review here, I might be helping others to avoid seeing a movie they won't like?
