The master surpasses himself! This tale of an italian childhood in the 1930s is one of the best films ever made about fascism. It manages both to ridicule the Mussolini era and to present a sympathetic portrait of unthinking collaboration with totalitarianism. But it is in no sense a heavy political film. See through the eyes of a child, life is wonderful and magical despite the adults and the madness of the times. I have seen this movie close to a dozen times, and each time has been a pure delight.
