It is basically not related to the book and the acting is horrible. Bad movie.

Good movie. Haven't read the books so I can't make a comparison.

*sigh* I own the trilogy and have read the books many times... just like with Harry Potter the movie doesn't measure up to the book because a lot is left but still I liked the graphics and the story was ok enough to keep me awake and watching so it could have been worse.

I entered the theater with extremely high expectations because I had read the book beforehand and I loved it. The movie was, and I'm not even joking, the worst movie I've ever seen. Everything was in the wrong place, the most important scenes in the entire book were clipped out, and things were changed unnecessarily. Although I must admit it would have been an enjoyable movie if I hadn't read the book first, and that's the only reason it's getting a 2 instead of a 1.

The books on which this series is based were really excellent, and I have to say I found the film adaptation so-so. As others have said, LOTS was left out. Anyone who liked the movie should definitely read the books, for a far richer experience! Regarding previous comments about the film being anti-church... I don't get it... In this movie, there is an all-powerful quasi-government organization which seeks to control how people think and how they should live their lives. Churches and religions are not at all like that... are they? ;-)

An excellent movie. Nicole Kidman was great. She has a very difficult part, and needs to be loved, hated, bad and good, all at the same time. She pulled it off, which made the movie. Dakota Blue Richards was totally believable and a joy to watch. She has a long career ahead of her. My hope is that they hurry up with parts 2 & 3 of this trilogy. (To the Catholics "it's a movie"! Untie the knot in your shorts, and quit being so much like the Bolvangar facility that separates children from their imagination )

Well it was ok but kind of scary. But other than that it was ok. I dont like how it stopped and we have to wait for #2.

Though the book was enchanting and had the most amazing movie potential EVER I found this film badly written and with choppy editing that could rival even the most horrendous of its kind. To much was cut and though the special effects were very well done I couldn't help but notice how much the choppy cuts took away from it but hye, if you can tune that out go and see it.

This is so bad. The battle was poor. The story line was awful. Don't watch this movie people.

If you've read the books, you will probably find this movie disappointing. It bothers me that they reduce the role of the church and change it to the magistereum or whatever just to not offend people. It's also too choppy and leaves out too much of the gore.

It was a good movie. I was not aware that it was just a first installment of more to come so I was left wanting more at the end and that sort of annoyed me, but thats my fault for not knowing. Either way, good for the kids, mine loved it, even though she is a little crazy:^)

A piece of pretentious junk, an insult to intelligence. A waste of time and money.

Cute little movie! Best since my husband Larry died fifteen years ago! That little girl; oh, she was such a little seed blossoming into a prettier flower every second. She was what my uncle Horton Fitzgerald would have called, 'One in a million.' Well, I'd definitely agree with him. Oh, you youngsters, you! You young mothers out there, your children would love it! Oh, it's crisp to the very soul! It is special for me to know that my grand daughter is watching it tomorrow night, because I am ninety-four, and if there is anything that my heart desires, it's that my daughter's daughter enjoys something great. Nicole Kidman; what a young little talent. Pretty as a rose; my favorite flower!! Well, hope you go to see it. Bye bye, now! -Mrs. Fitzgerald.

Good escape movie. Fresh concepts, although I seem to have run into some ideas copied from other classic movies. But overall I have to recommend it.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] Pretty good. Lyra acted very well for that she is only about 11. But the plot was too rushed at some moments and It needed more clarification. But it was also pretty beautiful, especially the arctic landscape. The bear battle was very cool. Go see it if you want a good fantasy.

I have read the Golden Compass book, and I must say the movie wasn't too bad. The writers of the movie swiched the events of the plot around, and they ended it a bit to early, but it was a good movie.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] The movie did justice to the books, which were most entertaining, and really immersed you in the other worlds that they were describing. Lyra was great and even though Mrs Coulter I thought was more evil in the books, Nicole Kidman was not pleasant! I await the next two and hope that they follow the books as well as this one did.

This movie was definitely a disappointment. Do not watch it, all of the religious controversy was completely unneeded and if this movie is successful a second 1 is to be made with even MORE religious controversy. Basically the aim of this movie is to force religious views on people who don't realize these intentions. It is very unfair to everyone who just wants to watch a good movie but is being dragged into this horrible scheme that no one is aware of. Please inform all of your friends to not see this movie if you believe it is wrong to inflict such an evil cause on innocent people. Thank you for all of the support!

The Narnia movies are much much better and I found this movie a COMPLETE waste of time, also with the new Narnia movie coming out it is a much better idea to go see that than this anti-Narnia movie. Also if this movie is successful then another 1 will be made, imposing subjects targeting innocent people who are unaware of the writers evil intentions. Do not see this movie.

This movie exceeding my expectations. It did somehow remind me of Narnia with the animals and such. Nicole Kidman is excellent as always, just wish she would choose some more diverse roles. This movie would not be suitable for younger children, or children in general who scare easily. My 9 year old son was fine and enjoyed the movie.
