"Soul Power" is a movie that all lovers of New World African Music should see. Yes, it does have wonderful performances by Bill Withers, Celia Cruz, the Crusaders, The Spinners, B. B. King and a host of other mature performeers at the top of their professional game but that is not where the gems lie. Aside from Levy-Hinte's showing us the inside operation of getting the concert up and running, for music fans, the thrill is seeing who isn't mentioned and who appears in the backing groups during the performances. Ray Barretto looms huge. This now departed conga-King is featured as part of the crack New York latin ensemble - Fania All-Stars. His drum jam session in a market in Kinshasa with local drummers is a treat and a half. And look who's playing guitar behind Miriam Makeba. It is ledgendary Brazillian musician Sivuca. In the middle of a street, set up on a traffic island, we are privy to a performance by a wonderfully confident Zairian band that sounds so Mento-like, you would think they were performing in the middle of a road in 1959 Kingston, Jamaica (they don't get a credit that I saw) I could go on and on - and this is a film that Sweet Daddy Fonk Wong and I wished would go on and on. The director has said that if he used all the footage he wanted to use he would have had a three hour film. Sweet Daddy said he wished he had. DJZigZag aka Bill WAGRadio Online Reiter.

Documentary Homage to James Brown, Don King and crew," you are somebody" and it's the 70's again.

It was a real treat to see it on the big screen. Vibrant colour, fantastic music and some great sound bites from Ali, James Brown and others. I'd would have loved to have seen a lot more of the musical performances. Bill Withers, James Brown and The Spinners were great! It would be just as good on the small screen as well.
