[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.]
With Britney getting married twice in a year, Christina going from blond bombshell to Goth chick, and Lindsay defending how real her breasts are, at least there’s Hilary Duff. Despite looking like a mini-Jenna Jameson with her tight T-shirts and long, blond platinum locks, Raise Your Voice has a Christian feel to the movie. Hilary Duff plays the roll of a perky teen, Terri Fletcher, in the movie. Terri’s brother dies in a car crash – that she survives. So Terri loses the desire to sing – until she learns she’s been accepted to a prestigious summer music program in Los Angeles. Because her dad is an overprotective jerk, Terri lies to her father and runs off to L. A. on her own, with the help of her mom and her aunt (who could pass as one of Duff’s sister) Once she’s in L. A., her classmates collectively shun her for being a goody-goody and lacking what is necessary for an artist. She eventually falls into a romance with a British musician; who has played another British musician in another “tween” movie – What a Girl Wants. What I find annoying about this movie was the pathetic acting when it comes to their musical performances. The group, while smiling happily at each other, play the guitar and sing towards the end of the movie like hippies. Duff’s does sing very well, and does give her best effort, but that didn’t save the movie. By the end, I saw a few girls cry & me looking for the exit. I give Raise Your Voice 3/10, but add in the Hillary Duff factor – x2 to the final score: 6/10.
