Moulin Rouge [2000] Movie Reviews on CinemaClock

Dont expect a period piece. The director creates a fantasy world that is a cross between fin du sciècle Paris (around 1900), movie musicals, and pop music culture of the last half of the 20th century in the English-speaking world. It took me about 15 or 20 minutes to get acclimatized (and to get through all the quick cutting and 3D fly-throughs). But once I was past that, it was easy to get immersed. The characterisation was excellent, the sets and costumes outstanding, the musical and cultural juxtapositions were creative, and the singing by Ewan McGregor a wonderful surprise (he and Nicole Kidmans voices were well-matched for the duets as well). But most of all, the director had a vision. A full-figured, quite fantastical vision. You may or may not care for this vision, but this is certainly movie-making as an art form. Recommended.
