[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] Admittedly, great works of literature don't often translate into great works of cinema."Jesus's Son" isn't exactly the exception that proves the rule, but it brings to the screen a quality that is rare in contemporary cinema. Like Zadie Smith's "White Teeth, " and Sherman Alexie's "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist-Fight in Heaven, " Denis Johnson's original text of "Jesus's Son" can be best described as a novel forged from a series of short stories. In this capacity, Alison Maclean is fiercely loyal to the book on which her film is based. Obvious, but misguided analogies to "Pulp Fiction" and "Sin City" are sure to abound, but the film is too personal, too soulful for the comparisons to really work. The film succesfully punctures the binary of formulaic arcs and resolutions and dehumanized studies in mise en scene. We care about FH. We judge him. We see ourselves, not in his small talk or his taste in music, but in his very soul. We laugh at his adventures, and despair with him as he spirals downward into the darkness. His plight is so believable, so resonant, that every modicum of hope, every moment of insight, cuts right to the heart. FH doesn't save the world, get the girl, or go down in a fiery blaze of glory. He is real. His life stretches in all directions, surmounting every horizon. His is a state of being that is not only fresh, but poignant in a medium where we are so used to spending every moment racing towards victory, skidding clear of disaster, or calmly dissecting shiny surfaces one frame ata time.

What band/musician played the song near the beginning where Samantha Morton was dancing all cute in that house where the quiet guy led them?

I rented the video purely on the basis of the fat bloke running into a road sign on a trailer I saw. It surprised me by being a genuinely weird, funny, well acted and original indie film, a genre that has a little to much pretention for my liking. Dont be fooled by the 10/10 'best film ever reviews listed above mine, it's not a truly great film but it is very, very good, rent it now as an antidote to Pearl Harbour and its ilk.

I saw the movie last night on a whim on video. I was really impressed. Billy Crudup was excellent and I liked the quirkyness of it. It was really heartbreaking at some points and yet hilariously funny at others.

I thought that the movie was funny yet strangely the truest movie I've seen. It has great actors and true love, drugs and inside the head of a man not knowing what he's doing in life. It's definitely a think piece that will blow you away. Oh and don't get freaked out by the name. The movie isn't about Jesus it's just an infoism. I recommend it A+++++

I saw this movie over in Ireland, before its official opening- and I fell in love with it! Rather than a dreary tale of a drug adict, I found Jesus's Son to be quite uplifting- I recommend it to anyone who likes movies that are a little out of the ordinary, or anyone who simply likes to see a good movie that will make them think.
