For the most part - hard to believe! Pure escapism and fantasy. Some of the acting was good and funny at times.

Entertaining and well-scripted movie (well for the most part - I couldn't buy into the relationship between Julia (Annette Benning) and her son. Annette Benning was made for this prima donna role - good sparks between her and Jeremy Irons who plays the cuckolded husband. The movie plays almost as theatre - so if you enjoy that don't miss this movie. Also a good interpretation of Somerset Maugham and the mindset of his novels - roles and games people play.

Annette Bening is marvelous in this movie. And her passionate performance at the end is a must see. A slow starter, a bit of a bore at the beginning ( like many good novels ) but rising to a wonderful crescendo at the end. Don't miss it.

A superb movie - a truly unique performance by Annette Bening and the supporting cast! A faithful and brilliant adaptation of a witty novel, too good to wait for rentals.

The film was o.k. Julia is not an admirable human being. She's self-centered [...]. The last scene (the revenge) is funny and well done.

A thoroughly enjoyable film. The plot is easy to follow, with some surprises and its quite funny. Left the theatre chuckling and feeling good.

The place was full of old folks, not a film for the younger croud. I wished the sound could have been louder, I have a problem with the british accent. Not bad, can wait for video. C+ [...]

The whole cast, especially Annette Benning as Julia and Juliette Stephenson as her dresser, are wonderful! The scene of her revenge on stage is hilarious and brilliantly done. Upbeat story and satisfying ending; beautiful 30s period costumes and set. All in all a very pleasurable evening. Highly recommended.

I loved this movie. I am a movie junkie and for this year this will probably be my favourite. A middle aged woman's revenge. What a delight! Anette Bening is fantastic in this movie. I have not read the book so I can't say how true it is to the novel but this show I would recommend!

Excellent movie. Very very fine performance by Annette Bening. I usually don't like romantic comedies, and shortly in, as I became familiar with the character of "Julia" My skepticism grew. However I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Funny, touching, soulful and a positively brilliant finale. Good film.

A well acted ensemble film, good period piece, amusing story, dry British humour.
