Joel, a psychology student, sets out to make a documentary about the different ways people from developed and developing nations seek true happiness. He convinces his best friend Steve to accompany him as cameraman on his journey to Kenya, India, and Thailand. They are shocked, saddened and angered as they document drought, hunger and the AIDS epidemic first hand. But they also see a beautiful side of humanity, one that can go on with humor, perseverance and faith in the midst of suffering, inequality and oppression. Along the way, they cannot help also documenting their own journeys of awakening and change. Joel and Steve discover that the only way to build a new world is to shatter an old one.
