[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.] I loved her purity in the begining of the movie and how she slowy started to develop feelings for Johannes Vermeer.

Decent movie. But I've read the book, and I think that's the only reason it made SENSE! It was horrible how much they left out. THey didn't even show how Griet and Pietre got married in the end. And about a million other things. Like her siblings. Anyway, watch it if you've read the book but otherwise don't bother.

Less rewarding that watching paint dry because with paint you don't expect much to happen but with a movie you do... and it didn't..

A beautiful movie that takes you back to another place and time. I liked how so much was communicated without words. The scenery and waterways of Holland were lovely.

A verry good movie cleaver, sweet, full of love and beautiful feelings, this movie is really a perfect one. The story between Griet and Vermeer is magic... Go to see it and if you accept the dream you'll travel in a wonderfull film like if you were visiting a picture of Vermeer!!!

A visual feast. Romantic and sweet. What a nice change from modern life to see the canals and interiors of Delft. What an actress, she needs say nothing to make you understand. What a great artist is brought to life in this story. Bravo.

This movie was excellent, the whole time I felt like I was I was in a painting. It was so refreshing to take a brake from those typical american movies. That actress is one of my favorites and all the movies I've seen of hers were excellent.

If you are into action movies, stay home with Rambo, Bruce and Arnie. This beautiful movie is a slow journey into the 17th century and the reality of a maid working for the painter Jan Vermeer. To fully appreciate this wonderful succession of Vermeer marterpieces, I recommend you get acquainted with the work of the artist first. You will then understand the light, the colors and the details offered to us by this gem of a movie.

Scarlett Johansson is an actress. Her face can be very plain or exceedingly beautiful, depending on the requirements of her character. This film of non-action requires her to be believable both as a scullery maid and as a desirable artist's model. I saw the film twice. She pulls it off.

I liked Girl With a Pearl Earring. I did not read the book. So I had nothing to compare it to. I found that movie made me realize that sometimes we touch people lives on a much deeper level than we could ever imagine. People in positions of power have a lot more riding on their shoulders then what meets the eye... The movie is also about people and their flaws...

O would love to be able to say this was a great movie. Visually it was stunning, the cinematography was great, it was everything that I imagine renaissance Holland to have been. However, my lord it was boring. This is a wonderful book and for some reason the script writers decided to leave all the little things out that connect everything and make it a story. I left feeling a bit empty and cold, if you read the book it will all make sense.

Very nice artsy film, scenery is beautiful and realistic at the same time, you have to think in this one, it's not dialogue thick! Better than most of the current tripe.

This is the best movie I have seen in a long time. I read the book so knew what to expect. The writer's and the director did not cheapen the story in any way, in fact, it was richly layered, staying true to the chaste tension that was described so beautifully in the book. Scarlet Johannsen was, indeed, a perfect Greit, however all of the acting was excellent. The cineematography was extremely well done. A perfect movie.

Visually a stunning movie. Lighting and cinematography capture exactly the mood of the flemish masters. Subtle and moving portrayals by the entire cast, but the film moves with all the energy of a glacier!

Well, what can I say? For art lovers, this movie is a 10/10, but for anyone who doesn't hold the same appreciation or fascination for art in general would not find this very stirring. I went to see it with my boyfriend, a computer geek, and he was still waiting for the plot to develop at the end of the film, while I, the art fiend, was blown away. The acting is subdued, the cinematograhpy is oscar-winning, the music enchanting. The decor, costume and everything related to the period looked seemlessly perfect (including the way food is handled, have supper before seeing the movie! ) Overall I enjoyed it very much, but the ending did leave me on the brink, not very conclusive. And the pace is slow, beware action-lovers! A good drama, can't wait to read the book!

Interesting movie! I cannot rank it as high as many have, however. Johansson gives a great performance, but the character was limited in scope and depth, and she could not take it further than she did. The cinematography and the direction of this film were exquisite. An artistic portrayal of an artist's story. The subtleties are numerous, the color, the lighting and intrigue built around the artist's character. However, the film ultimately fell short of my expectations for a character-driven film. I haven't read the book yet, but I hope it has better character development and more depth and meaning in the plot. Overall, I enjoyed it a great deal and think it is definitely worth watching, especially if you have an eye for art.

If you like charactor-driven movies this is a must see. Johannson is turning out to be the strongest young actress we've seen in years... decades! Strong, personal performances by supporting cast as well. Beautifully shot and directed. In fact, it was perfect.

This movie is absolutely amazing. The cinematography is so beautiful... we are visually walking through Vermeer's paintings. The sensitivity, the discrete sensuality, the minute details, and especially the "light", in this movie are just wonderful. Scarlett Johansson was just perfect for the part! This movie is soft and slow... I loved every minute of it!

Not the best "artist vs muse" type of films but it has its charm no doubt. Being an art freak myself I was very impressed by the ressembance of the actress playing Vermeer's model to the one in his "Girl with a pearl earing" canvas... The acting is good and the script is just okay. I did not read the book but I guess its more sophisticated (character wise) than the film. Go see it if you like art or the Myths around Art. One thing that got on my nerve though in the dialogue and it's the line: "Do not get into his world". I think that we heard this cliché phrase enough to errase it from topics on artists and their so called World... Actually between shoomakers and Artists there is no difference except that Artists do not fix shoes... Voilà!

Read the book. LOVED the movie. Itis very beautiful: lighting, costumes, settings, framing of shots-each frame trying to recreate the mood ofa Vermeer painting. It tries to be faithful to slight story of bookwithout sensationalizing anything.

This movie has restored my faith in film. It takes the time to properly evoke the era to showcase art, landscape & fully develop the characters. Many young people have criticized this film, they have quite obviously never studied art or film & should stick to Schwarzenegger & Adam Sandler movies... This is a mature film, for an educated & mature audience. It was mesmorizing & brilliant.

It SUCKED! I read the book.. didn't make it to the end... so went to the movie out of curiosity... realised why I couldn't finish the book.. because nothing was happening. Only one word comes to mind: STAGNANT. Spare yourselves. Only thing learnt from this 17th century jaunt is: Thank God for plastic!

This is one of the most beautifully done period pieces I have seen at the movies in a long time! The wardrobe, landscape & scenery encapculted the times of Vermeer. The quietness & artistry of the film was spellbinding, a must see film. My only dissapointment was in the language, it would have expressd more of the Dutch culture to at least have the accents... only a small dissapointment ~.

This film is a work of art and passion. It is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. Every frame of the film, if stopped, could be a work of art in itself. The acting is superb. Tension between the characters is skillfully portrayed through a simple eyebrow raised, a breath held, or a pierced lip. A wonderfully refreshing change from our regular diet of Hollywood root-um-toot-um's. Lovely. Exquisite. Artful. Perfect! I know I will see this film again and again. Go see it twice!

What a beautiful movie! Those who expect an action-packed film, or a romantic comedy, um, you've got the WRONG movie, so DONT go. I personally did not find it slow paced, but rather sensuous, captivating, relaxing... basically 2 hours of sheer pleasure. The images are absolutly wonderful. And to anyone that has been to that region in Holland, there are a few scenes that capture the soft yellow hazy light so typical of it. The actors were really great as well. Wat een heel mooi film!

Some may complain that this is a slight movie but this is not a valid complaint considering the slight novel the book is based on. I read the Tracy Chevalier novel in a couple of days, even with the demands of work, home and my two young sons. Here the book comes to life almost as a moving painting. The sets and cinematography are stunning, the entire movie is a feast for the eyes. As almost everyone here has said, Scarlett Johansson is breathtaking as Griet, she is most certainly an actress you will be seeing a lot of in the coming years. The supporting cast is also terrific, although one could do with fewer appearance by Tom Wilkinson - he seems to appear in every 3rd movie these days. Colin Firth as Vermeer is at his best although definitely playing a much smaller role than Johansson. When the two are on screen together you are completely absorbed by the tension and yearning they feel. If you love period movies and beautiful cinematography go see this movie. If you are expecting action - stay home.

It is a masterpiece about a masterpiece. I have a book about Vermeer, the movie was like a time travel to this period. The decor in Vermeer's home is faithfully taken out of several other paitings by Vermeer.

One more time Scarlett Johansson blew me away, proving (is there any need? ) that she is in a class of her own. The entire movie is built arround her character and the envy/jealousy of people toward her. The ambiguous relationship that she will develop with Vermeer is intersting (good acting from Colin Firth here) The picture was arguably good too. I would have liked something more insightful about the life and work of Vermeer but this movie is an adaptation of a novel rather than a biography so I guess that my complain doesn't stand. That movie need to be seen for Johansson. She make it all worthy.
