Maximus (Russell Crowe), once a trusted general and heir to the throne, is banished when Emperor Marcus Aurelius is murdered by his son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), who becomes the new emperor and orders Maximus' execution. Maximus barely escapes death, but is forced into slavery and trained as a gladiator. Becoming a fierce gladiator, Maximus returns to Rome for revenge.
