Barbara Stanwyk has been one of the greatest of HOllywood stars from her beginnings at Columbia to her later movies in the 60's and then her great work on television including The Thorn Birds, a medium in which she justly received her just deserves in lieu of the overlooking by Hollywood to ever choose her as Best Actress Oscar Winner, a real sin, though she did get a SPECIAL OSCAR for LIfetime Achievement in the 1980's when she still looked radiant.
As for our film, Stanwyk shines in a 'bad girl' role in this provocative pre-production code melodrama. Leaving her Erie speakeasy to literally conquer New York, she fancifully sleeps her way straight to the top using and discarding men as to her moods. You'll be stunned to witness a very young Duke Wayne as one of her paramours she conquers. Keep in mind, as said, that this film is pre-code 1933 and so a very enjoyable headlong drive into hedonism and ruthless ambition.
Viewing Stanwyk so young might come as a shock to many, but her many talents were always there. No matter the era, ( even the fifties ) Stanwyk was able to rise above a lot of the schlock handed her and remain a star. She was one of the few big stars to be able to transition to television with the suavity of her movie days! A very welcome film hardly ever seen on Turner. Catch it if it's on again! There will be no regrets. Congrats to a great pioneering "talkie" actor... La Stanwyk!
