    Duel in the Sun

After 'Gone With The Wind' Selznick certainly had other hits, but it was 'Duel in The Sun' directed by King Vidor assisted by Otto Brower which became another of his massive epics. Again, one of the problems with the film was the interference of Selznick as producer which had detrimental effects on the film and pretty well drove King Vidor to drink. This western is a savage portrayal of a hellion of a woman played by Selznick's wife, the perfect Jennifer Jones in a characterization that was as far removed from her persona than any other role she essayed. Unfortunately, even with the astounding array of big name stars (Cotton, Peck, Gish, Barrymore), and a very distinguished supporting cast, critical response to the film was mixed and no where did it receive the acclamation expected. It simplest terms, it is not a truly well made film despite its size and effort.
