Fences by August Wilson is a superior play about people of colour as important in our era as Larraine Hansbury's A Raison in the Sun was during the 1950's. The film is notable for a very strong turn of a man of colour as it relates to his family and society at large. Denzel has already played the role on Broadway and he is using the play as his directorial debut. The acting is formidable. There are great male performances again this year, but Denzel could sneak into the 5 as Best Actor especially as he has done double duty here. Viola Davis is being touted by her studio as Best Supporting Actress though she should be in the Best Actress Category. I have to hand it to the late August Wilson who has provided us in all his plays, including FENCES such an integral part of the black experience. Some scenes are so raw, explosive and rife with pain that your very skill will crawl. Fabulous job by Denzel and all concerned.
