An enormous, gargantuan Roman spectacle became a colossal hit on release in 1951, all directed by Mervyn Leroy and Anthony Mann. Robert Taylor is his usual "strong" man type in this roman sandal of a film while Deborrah Kerr is magnificent along with the oddball Peter Ustinov offering support. It's a good film much enjoyed, but it had the misfortune of a small screen release... just two years before CinemaScope. Had it been fortunate enough to be filmed in the wide lens process, the results would have been staggering!
