If you’re a big fan of anthology horror films, you’ve surely heard of “Creepshow”, but what about the sequel, “Creepshow 2”? It’s decent entertainment I suppose, but at times it’s really rough and just barely squeaks past the line into “good movie territory. We’ve got four stories to cover so I’m going to give a short synopsis of each segment and an individual rating for each, followed by a general impression.

Ol’ Chief Woodenhead - Rating: 2/5

A kind shopkeeper and his wife are shaken down by a trio of thugs. The villains are determined to vandalize the building and rob them blind. They make a big mistake by taking the robbery too far and taking some sacred Native American jewelry. Who will correct this injustice, perhaps the titular character of the story, a carved wooden statue of a Native American, armed with a tomahawk, a bow and ready for war?

This story is easily the worst. The acting is bad all around, the villains are the generic narcissistic, supervillain-level bullies you’ve seen in countless bad films, and Ol’ Chief Woodenhead doesn’t really have much presence. When the bad guys get their comeuppance, the special effects are ok, but all of the kills are off-screen. It’s a rough start and a big disappointment. You can see everything coming if you’ve seen a handful of “Tales from the Crypt” episodes.

    The Raft – Rating: 3,5 / 5

A group of teens decides to have some fun in the sun by going to a small nearby lake. When they go in the water, a strange black pool starts following their every move. They quickly run up on a small raft in the middle of the lake and discover, too late that the pool is carnivorous. How are they going to escape without being eaten?

The effects in this story are all over the place. Often, the thing that’s after our heroes looks like a sad little island of garbage bags floating in the water but when it starts attacking and eating, it looks fantastic. The practical effects here are impressive and the premise is pretty good too. Towards the end is where it loses points, first for revealing it’s characters as true-blue idiots. I know nobody wants to die a virgin, but come on! Second for having a “twist” that’s so lame it should have been cut out entirely. Literally, five seconds removed from the ending and it would have improved the film significantly.

    The Hitchhiker – Rating: 3,5 / 5

A woman accidentally kills a hitchhiker. In a panic, she drives off, only to be tormented by the man’s ghost. Or is it her mind playing tricks?

Once again, we’ve got some solid special effects here. Every time we see the ghost, he gets beaten up a bit more and looks worse than the last time we took a peek. What this segment suffers from is a lack of direction, particularly at the end. It tries to get you to question if the ghost is real or not, but it doesn’t make a very compelling case. The ghosts intentions are also really vague throughout, so the ending just comes out of nowhere. There’s a consolation price in the form of a nice quotable line, however. Just gargle and try to say “Thanks for the ride! ”. Anyone who has seen this movie will know exactly what you’re referring to.

    Wraparound story – Rating 1 / 5

Our host Mr. Creep gives Billy, an amateur of comic books an issue of “Creepshow”. After picking up a Venus Fly Trap bud from the post office, he is attacked by a pack of bullies. When he fights back, they give chase, but who is going to have the upper hand in the end?

This segment is animated and it looks like manure that’s been run over. You get to see Mr. Creep (which is just a lamer version of the Cryptkeeper by the way, complete with bad puns) and he actually looks better when it’s a guy in makeup than he does when drawn. The character designs are really bizarre (The group of bullies includes a metalhead and a nerd with his glasses taped up) and it doesn’t use any the animated format in any way that is clever or imaginative. The ending is a big letdown.

Overall we have a rating of 2,5 / 5. In this case, it means the movie is often pretty good, but for each moment of quality, we have an equal amount of mediocrity. It’s a pleasant distraction but there are more moments where you will be laughing at the film than with it and not a lot where you will actually be scared. Still, I would recommend you watch if you are a fan of the genre. For everyone else, please don’t pick this up. I’d be worried that it would scare you away from horror anthologies, a format of film that is often much better than “Creepshow 2”. (On DVD, January 3, 2014)
