    Peter Pan

The 2003 film version of Peter Pan is a pretty solid interpretation that will please fans of the story while still trying some new things to keep it fresh.

Wendy Darling (Wood) enthrals her younger brothers John (Harry Newell) and Michael (Freddie Popplewell) with stories of Peter Pan (Jeremy Sumpter) and Tinker Bell (Ludivine Sagnier.) Told by her parents and elderly aunt that she’s too old for such things, Wendy is surprised to see none other than Peter Pan brings her and her brothers to Neverland where they must battle the villainous Captain Hook (Jason Isaacs.)

The complex theme of growing up and being able or willing to let go of childish things while staying true to you is very well explored here. The special effects are also well done and although a little dated at times, the numerous flying scenes, creatures and sets are convincing. Practical effects are used whenever possible and when combined with the elaborate costumes and this timeless story, the film is set in what feels like a realistic world. I thought the acting was good, although Ludivine Sagnier as Tinker Bell is often way over-the-top. It’s true that her character is supposed to be exaggerated, but there is no subtlety in her silent performance and it’s distracting when compared to the other characters. Everyone else, even the child actors often have a lot more going on than what it shown on the surface.

The highlight of this adaptation is the drama between the characters. As we realise along with Wendy that although Peter is a lot of fun, his child-like attitude is best in finite quantities it adds tension and dimension to a story that we’ve seen played very lightly before. There are a few moments towards the end that stick too close to the original stage play and don’t quite work but when the movie calls for an action climax, the movie delivers with some inventive additions to the story in some good cinematic moments. It isn’t a perfect interpretation but it’s a solid version of the “Peter Pan” story that’s more than a little bit entertaining. (On DVD, March 28, 2013)
