When Peter Jackson announced he was going to expand the Hobbit into three movies, I thought to myself "two I could see, but three? The book isn't deep enough to expand to three" And I was correct. With the LOTR trilogy, and even the first Hobbit film, Peter Jackson did a really good job of honoring Tolkien's work. The first Hobbit added new material that came from other works like Tolkien's unfinished tales. THIS MOVIE however, Peter Jackson decided to write his own story. Aside from going from point A to B to see to D, this movie in no way follows the book. AT ALL. I was so angry by the end of the film that I wanted to walk out and if I wasn't with a larger group of friends and family, I would have. I will not spoil the film, but several key plot points were destroyed in this film and Peter Jackson wrote out an entirely new story that destroys the premise of the book. All this being said, I gave it a decent score based on one simple fact: If you never read the book, then this movie could be good entertainment. If you DID read the book, then you will probably be very upset like I was.

I read the books... I'm not offended or upset by it. I thought it was rather well done and followed the book rather close. I think you're angry by the added material? Makes for a more interesting story in my mind... I can't wait for the last installment. Should tie the Hobbit and LOTR together nicely. One question: How did this movie destroy the premise of the book? If anything, you should be angry at LOTR for omitting the battle for the shire! Now that PMO big time!
