    A Woman's Face

Joan Crawford is so good in this great film that it is positively sinful she did not receive an Oscar Nomination. The reason for this is that MGM had lost interest in her and wasn't promoting her for anything. In a couple of years she would be let go by MGM, Warners picking up her contract. In this great role a deviant, scarred woman undergoes plastic surgery to make her face not only acceptable but beautiful. It's all a strange premise but it works beautifully. Once let go by MGM, Crawford took 2 years to find the super role she needed to be an A-lister again. She pursued MILDRED PIERCE but director Michal Curtiz wanted Bette Davis or another big name for the role. He wanted no part of " that Crawford […]" as he put it. After testing for Mildred, Curtiz was flabbergasted how perfect Joan was for Pierce. Miss Crawford won the 1945 Oscar as Best Actress of the year.
