" Agnes of God " was a tremendous hit on Broadway some years before it was filmed with Amanda Plummer as Agnes and Geraldine Page as Mother Superior. In the film, both Anne Bancroft as Mother Superior and Meg Tilley were Oscar nominated for performances beyond exceptional. This film can create quite the mystery of the entire proceedings. I do believe some FAITH in God is necessary to navigate its very troubled waters. Jane Fonda as the psychiatrist is the weakest link in the film. The film often has sightings of white pigeons/doves on the convent rooftop. This is very significant as the pigeons or doves are symbolic of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit's intervention can explain a lot to those who believe.
Agnes of God is such a thought provoking film. I was totally in awe as to what was taking place in the convent. It's a brilliant film. It's truly a shame Meg Tilley did not win the Oscar. Her portrayal of the young nun or postulate is highly complex as she seems to go into trances to experience the Beatific Vision... it's a SAINTLY performance, Meg's very finest hour.
