Depp is in one of his weakest-played roles here, inconsistent and half-hearted. (Perhaps Burton's enlargening of the Hatter's eyes took away from the actor's expressions?) The story and its ever-present questions are rendered meaningless by a formulaic action plot.

Umm to point at Depp as the reason why the movie is not what it should be is simplistic. There are a number of other actors that I shall not be named that did far worse. In fact, Helena was the most wonderful of all as where the twins (sadly they were animated) On the good side of the equation (Alice's Side) I felt there was a lack of magic/chemistry. Depp didn't come through as shining but I wouldn't say it was his fault either. He did a great job.
Are you insane?! Depp had such an amazing performance and played the hatter perfectly. The movie had a great plot, and exceptionaly well played characters.
Depp played his role perfectly, his constant change in attitude made the character even more. Although you could argue his eyes were distracting, it also adds alot to the maddness of the character.
