"Black Mass" is almost a documentary; it dramatises the facts but does not alter them, at least from what I remember of those times and events. It is a peek inside the corrupt Massachusetts Irish community, from the crooked cops, compromised politicians, and support and financing of the IRA, to the drug gangsterism of Bulger and his pals. Whitey Bulger's era was the high water point of the American Irish mob and this film depicts it honestly though not entirely unsympathetically. It's as much a history lesson as a drama, though it is very dramatic and very, very well done. The actors are ALL superb; Johnny Depp isn't the only one to deliver a stellar performance. As others have predicted," Black Mass" will likely receive several Oscar nominations. It is a long film but one which seemed to pass quickly as it held my interest throughout.
