I hadn't seen or heard any references to A Streetcar Named Desire. Yet this film smacked of Kazan's gem from beginning to end. Cate Blanchett was dominant in the Vivien Leigh role, Sally Hawkins performed admirably in the Kim Hunter role, and Marlon Brando's role was broken into two characters, an ex-husband and a current boyfriend. Playing even half a Brando character would be too much for many actors.
