This rapturous film about, arguably, the greatest soprano of the 20th century, is not a bio-pic dealing with her entire life. If that's what you want stay away. I feel this is an artsy film more suited to operaphiles who lived through the Callas years or, like me, have read, heard and seen everything about La Divina Maria. The latter part of her life all takes place in Paris once her voice has failed. A plan is hatched, impossible to mention as it is too crucial to revealing plot. I was quite surprised that Fanny Ardant got the Callas role, but she pulls it off. Jeremy Irons and Joan Plowright are a nice bit of icing on the cake.
This has nothing directly to do with the film, but allow me to point out that Maria Callas's final years in Paris were a hell on earth. Her voice was gone; she was ditched by Onassis for Jacqueline Kennedy; her last tour with tenor Giuseppe Di Stefano in 1972 ( I wasn't even born) was a total failure and she must have had health issues. She literally died at 56 of a broken heart. One of the saddest stories about one of the most glorious voices ever to hit an opera stage or recording studio. GET THE DVD IF YOU ARE AN OPERA FAN!
