    Carol

There are a multitude of reasons why a romance can fail. Age disparity. Social class, economic and cultural differences. Career aspirations. Family influence. Outside liaisons. Public pressure. And many more, including the key issue in 'CAROL'. The romance between Carol (Cate Blanchett) and Therese (Rooney Mara) was actually against the law in the 1950's and is still considered outside moral boundaries by many today. It is surprising that the original novel was penned in 1950. As an entry on the Bestseller lists at that time, it caused me to wonder if the majority of book readers dabbled in the realm of illicit sex.. fantasy or otherwise. Why else would the novel have been so popular?

The two lead players in the film are so convincing you would easily accept them as neighbours. They seemed so typically ordinary in their own surroundings, and the pace of events on screen matched the growth of their personal relationship. The other players were all first rate in presenting the obstacles faced by the two lead characters.

The distributors were not sure how this film would be received by the general public. It has previously played in front of specific audiences including the Toronto Film Festival and has received across-the-board positive reviews, yet was not opened in wide release mode. Although certainly not the first movie to present lesbianism on screen, 'CAROL' may ultimately be considered one of Hollywood's great romance films and be with us for a long time.
