If you use a Turing machine to decode the name Danny Collins you are likely to find the name Al Pacino. This is Al's story beginning to end: talented star sells out for fame and fortune but returns to family in time to redeem himself and recover his self respect.

Annette Benning is a gem as the sexy/shrewish innkeeper, and the chemistry in her scenes with Al is worth the price of admission. However, there is a disappointing conclusion to the lovely, likeable romance between the two leads that leaves the audience cold.

The film addresses the disparity between celebrity and ordinary and teaches that neither is necessarily better than the other. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.

The film is like the man himself: supremely adorable yet ridiculously off-putting. It is a rare treat to a mature audience that will appreciate the music and sentimentality.

A saccharine take on some of life's bitter pills.
