Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is without a doubt the best Apes film ever made. It builds off of the terrific good will created by its predecessor and also manages to top Rise in every conceivable category. Again the motion capture work by Andy Serkis is simply brilliant. Never before have the Apes, particularly Caesar, looked so alive. The sequel also ups the emotional ante considerably, choosing to focus much more on the Ape world then ever before. The result being the audience truly cares about the plight of the Apes and their families, making the inevitable war with the humans even more emotionally stirring. Dawn also does a great job of demonstrating the similarities between the two species and how fear and mistrust on both sides leads to a conflict that neither side really wanted. It is as profound a statement about war as you're likely to find in a summer blockbuster of any kind. That, coupled with strong acting from Jason Clarke and Gary Oldman, as well as some fantastic action scenes make Dawn a truly remarkable piece of work.
