    Don Jon

Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut is impressive enough but it is a sad commentary on our modern world that many of our young people are engaging in on-line "sex" to the extreme. As we see both the men and the women who frequent the clubs appear there with their own agendas; the young men seek instant intimacy when they choose their "randoms". The young women as shown by Johansson's character are influenced by emo Hollywood chick flicks to expect to capture a handsome, passive man who'll satisfy all their whims. There is a certain amount humour: although Jon spends hours down loading smut he obsessively keeps his apartment as clean as a hospital ward. He's seen driving his muscle car in a state of road/rhoid rage while heading to church where he receives absolution from his sexual "sins" with the usual admonition to say 10 Our Fathes and 10 Hail Marys. Ultimately, the film is about modern relationships gone awry amongst shallow, narcissistic, selfish people. Shades of reality tv's Jersey Shore!
