    Ex Machina

Alex Garland, accomplished author and screenwriter, steps behind the camera for the first time here in a story he penned. Perhaps he was thinking of Spike Jonze' HER (2013) as the previous model for 'artificial intelligence', here adding human form to the empathetic listening abilities of HER's computer human. Oscar Isaac plays the rich, alcoholic genius inventor who recently completed AVA, model number 9.6, in his search for the perfect 10. Domhnhall Gleeson is top-notch as a bright employee of Isaac who is thrilled to assist the testing of Isaac's newest computer model... The film however belongs to Alicia Vikander, model number 9.6. Her performance as an attractive, almost human machine keeps all eyes on her as she and Gleeson share man-machine secrets. The striking exterior scenes, affecting a sense of total isolation, were shot in Norway.
