I saw the 1967 Far From the Madding Crowd a few years ago and it blew me away. First of all take a look at the superior casting of Julie Christie, Terrence Stamp, Peter Finch and Alan Bates. I adore Thomas Hardy which made the almost 3 hour film fly by. Tess of the D'Ubervilles is my favourite Hardy novel. One can't say much as the new Far From the Madding Crowd is finally out with Carey Mulligan. The cast doesn't seem to be as strong as the 1967 version brilliantly directed by Oscar Winning Director John Schlesinger (for Midnight Cowboy) I can't wait to see it and compare the two... By the way Schlesinger directed Julie Christie in her 1965 Oscar Winning Performance in the then controversial DARLING!
