The movie Gone Girl looked good from the first time I saw the trailer. My wife and I made a point of seeing it early in its theatrical run. It was a little hard to follow as we tried to figure out what was going to happen. It was a surprise to learn Amy was alive and had contrived the whole disappearance. But the wheels came off badly and the whole enterprise collapsed when Desi was murdered - it was sickening, revolting, you name it, and it was a cheat on the audience. It was as if the film makers were stuck for an ending, and settled for shlock. Gone Girl is not a date movie.
However, if you watch the film alone your experience will be completely different. The depictions of the husband as a shallow, lazy philanderer are honest... he is what men are like. But the real draw is the extraordinary Rosamund Pike as Amy. My gosh but she's like so many women that I have known - beautiful, inscrutable, and truly dangerous. This will sound strange but Gone Girl is like seeing a film with an ex-flame, one you kind of miss.
Rosamund Pike will win the Oscar for her performance as Amy. Hopefully she will not be typecast as a femme fatale and suffer the fate of Glenn Close, the last actress who nailed the female as threat character.
Exceptional in many ways, and a personal favourite, Gone Girl is hip and knowing. As long as it is still running will I continue to go and watch it. A guilty pleasure, and exactly what movies are supposed to be.
