The principals in this film had three things in common. They were all past middle age, they were all descended from slaves, and they all feared that the melancholy strains from the deep American south, 'The Blues', would die when they did. Filmed in Louisiana and Mississippi, written and directed by Canadian Daniel Cross, the movie gives us a look into the souls of these marvelous musicians, most of whom regarded themselves as free only when they were in their own community with their own friends. There was talk of mean employers, being lied to and stolen from, and days of hunger. Yet they could laugh, and they did laugh. And play the music which belonged to them.,
Cross avoided turning this film into any sort of a travelogue, concentrating strictly on the reminiscences and music of these beautiful people. It will be difficult to avoid being absorbed into their lives.
