As a life long Woody Allen fan, it pains me to write this...
Irrational Man is Woody's second worst film ever (Hollywood Ending being the absolute worst) Despite amazing performances from Joaquin Phoenix and Parker Posey, this film fell flat on absolutely every level.
Emma Stone was a cute little muppet, however, she was too annoying for me to watch. I know she is Woody's new darling as Scarlett Johansson is unavailable, but she seemed miscast and out of her depth in this film. Her "piano playing" was beyond bad, as was every scene she had with her long suffering boyfriend.
The plot meandered, became predictable, turned into a middle aged man/professor's tale of angst, failure(s), ego, intellectual superiority, drinking - and then took a turn into the sexual zone - with a teenage university student. Yawn.
Just another film about "The Perfect Murder" which is too mean spirited for me.
The only great thing about the film was the sound track and the fact that some time very soon, Woody will make another film - one much better than this one.
