When you consider the subject matter of this film, you would expect to cry during the movie. But that doesn't happen because you are transported directly into Jean-Do's consciousness through the use of amazing cinematography; His brilliant and hilarious perceptions of the world around him and his own containment don't have an ounce of self-pity or meekness. Instead, you find yourself laughing along with him, or getting frustrated along with him as he endures and lives. The film captures his experience perfectly, you can actually empathize with the character's plight. This was not a movie. It was an experience.
