A strong indictment of Russian society wherein the protagonist, Kolya (like Job) confronts everything from an unfaithful wife, a corrupt bureaucracy and fairweather friends. But, he is spared the humiliation of boils. Then, there is also the Church which cosies up to the mayor who seeks to destroy everything that is near and dear to Kolya. Dark humour emerges from time to time. Best line: when confronted by Kolya's lawyer, the mayor is told that," You are in a horror movie and you are the lead." The film's theme is allegorical and derived from the Book of Job. Leviathon is the ravenous sea monster that devours everything in its path. Visuals present whale skeletons and the skeletal remains of long abandoned ships on the shoreline. The average man-like the dog on the electric grid-has no place to go to alleviate his suffering. The consumption of vodka serves to settle the pain. Kolya and his friends do not merely drink, but as the old joke goes they use a funnel. Although seemingly bleak in its conception this towering film does triumph by presenting a comprehensive picture of life in the Russian federation. Apparently, the Minister of Culture is unhappy with the film's pov because the Ministry provided 35% of the film's budget. Uncontestably the best film of 2014.
